Let's Fly!

In September of 2023 Jordan LaFordan hosted a weeklong celebration of Star Trek: Discovery on Social Media (search for #CelebrateDisco2023) to commemorate the show's 6th anniversary. She put up trivia quizzes, encouraged positive conversation, had us show our Disco t-shirts, link to favourite fan art, fan fiction, fan videos, etc. We ended the week with a watch-along of the premier episodes "The Vulcan Hello" and "Battle at the Binary Stars".

That made me want to re-watch the entire 4 seasons, as I had only watched it through once and did not remember a lot from the first two seasons. In the meantime season 5 has aired and I did a re-watch of that as well.

While watching I put my thoughts for each episode in lists of bullet points. Some are reactions to certain scenes, some are more fully formed thoughts. I started to post them all on my fediverse account. Because I wanted to have all my thoughts in one place, away from another platform, I decided to also publish everything here on my website.

As I keep thinking about the episodes long after posting my initial thoughts, chances are that I will go back and edit the lists I post here. That very much aligns with the idea of digital gardens that I have read and written about before. I may add thoughts, change opinions, rephrase or even delete passages over time. The original will always be unchanged on my fedi account as long as it exists. You can always also send me an e-mail to hello [-at-] theresmiling [dot] eu.

Please be aware that everything below this intro is full of spoilers. Full. Of. Spoilers. It should go without saying that you may not want to expand any of the seasons' sections below if you do not want to know what's happening.

Season 1

E01 The Vulcan Hello

Comment on this fediverse post

  • I totally forgot that Detmer didnโ€˜t have the implant from the beginning.
  • I'm gonna miss Captain G.
  • I dig the Klingons. That gold! Those costumes! The whole set! I also don't have issues with the make up, though it's not my favourite.
  • Why doesn't P+ offer English subtitles for this? They do on other Trek shows.

E02 Battle at the Binary Stars

Comment on this fediverse post

  • I really dig Michael's hair cut and costume when she first arrives on the Shenzhou. #CosplayGoals
  • LOVE the Shenzhou's transporter room! So retro.
  • Cool escape from the brig, Michael.
  • I'm gonna miss Captain G an aweful lot.
  • Now P+ didn't even show subtitles for the Klingon portions. Had to switch on German subs to see what they say.

E03 Context is for Kings

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Stamets is such an ass.
  • Tilly is so sweet.
  • That she's on Discovery means sheโ€˜s brilliant. Social awkwardness, autism, or any other condition is not a reason to not be on an important ship in the future, or a flagship like Barklay, or any ship for that matter. I celebrate that!
  • Aw, Saru, you beautiful being! So honest, but still kind of mean.
  • That Lorca is up to no good is crystal clear.
  • Blindly following him will not end up well for Landry I suspect. (I don't remember her or anything about her story at all.)
  • I loved the depiction of time passing by having people fade when Michael is working on the code.
  • I would like to know what people know about what happened at the binary stars vs. what they have been told. By official channels as well as by eye witnesses like Saru and Detmer. How much do people fill in the gaps with their own imagination?
Mutiny is no small oopsie, it's a heavy crime. So people being cold towards Michael is understandable. But making her responsible for the whole war? What? But we know the whole story, so it's easy for us to not hate her.
  • As soon as she's back being part of a crew, Michael's mood is up, she smiles and is friendly. She's found hope again. Go Michael!
  • Also no English subtitles on the P+ website.

E04 The Butcher's Knife Cares Not for the Lamb's Cry

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Yes to "You judge the creature by its appearance, and by one single incident from its past. Nothing in its biology suggests it would attack, except in self-defense. Commander, this creature is an unknown alien. It can only be what it is, not what you want it to be." It's clear that Michael is also talking about herself.
  • And that was that with Landry. It's not that I didn't warn her.
  • Michael is so Vulcan. Doing what is necessary, not what is nice.
  • Tilly remains wonderful.
  • Stamets is not such an ass after all.
  • I'm not liking that I feel pity for Voq. He's a blind follower of T'Kuvma, who actually started the war, and he's not particularly clever. Maybe that's why I feel pity.

E05 Choose Your Pain

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Why is it so easy for the Klingons to capture Lorca in Federation space? Because the plot needs them to. ๐Ÿ˜†
  • Why does a computer need to know the purpose of a task? Because the story needs it to. ๐Ÿ˜†
  • Tilly! The bit before and how she says "I'm so sorry." is easily my favourite Tilly bit ever.
  • Saru, you are wrong. Very wrong. But I like you again at the end.
  • Why was Stamets alone in the spore drive section? Because the plot needs him to. ๐Ÿ˜†
  • Good bye Ripper. Have fun roaming the universe.
  • I love the tooth brushing scene between Culber and Stamets.
  • That last scene however was super creepy!
  • Ash โค๏ธ
  • Totally not a fan of L'Rell. Torture is one of the most evil and despicable things ever.
  • I am a bit nitpicky with this one pointing at all those big plot holes. But don't be alarmed, I really enjoy the show.

E06 Lethe

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Ash โค๏ธ
  • Oh Sarek! You are a jerk, but I do feel sorry for you.
  • I love the scene between Ash and Michael at the end.
  • I see more torture in the future. ๐Ÿซฃ
  • I had a hair appointment shortly after watching the episode and I was so close to getting a Vulcan Michael hair cut. Maybe next time... ๐Ÿค”

E07 Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Michael is still so Vulcan.
  • Michael at parties = me at parties.
  • Ash โค๏ธ
  • High Stamets is so funny! LOL
  • I dig disco ship Discovery. ๐Ÿชฉ
  • Serious Stamets is so great!
  • "Never hide who you are." โค๏ธ
  • Mudd is such a disgusting person. Wonderfully portrayed by Rainn Wilson.
  • This is my favourite episode so far.

E08 Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Ooh! Does Stamets glimpse the Mirror Universe?
  • Fluffy the Tribble is back!
  • L'Rell and Cornwell's scream is great!
  • Ash โค๏ธ
  • Tilly is wonderful.
  • L'Rell of the house of spies and deceivers, I don't believe a word you say.
  • Possessed Saru is frightening.
  • L'Rell's costume is so cool.
  • Oh, Saru! You poor frightened thing! No!
  • I am really really enjoying this season. I'm so glad I'm re-watching. I remember that I liked it the first time around too. But knowing how the story continues makes it so much better this time, because I register all the foreshadowing now.

E09 Into the Forest I Go

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Lorca knows how to catch people.
  • Michael sees through Lorca so easily. Does that make him nervous?
  • Pattern simulators are so handy.
  • Maybe not so clever to have the transmitter make beep noises, or talk, or flash lights, or have the Starfleet delta printed on.
  • Ash โค๏ธ
  • Michael is a badass! ๐Ÿ’ช
  • Saru โค๏ธ
  • Lorca, I bet you know exactly where you are. You said it yourself: home.

E10 Despite Yourself

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Nice how at the end of the last episode we're pulling away from the ship and at the beginning of this one we are pushing back in.
  • Ash โค๏ธ
  • Go Captain Killy!
  • Lorca with a Scottish accent as the chief engineer. LOL I love that!
  • Hi Connor, nice to see you again.
  • Hugh! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ
  • Another nice effect is the beaming sequence from the Discovery over to the Shenzhou. Beautiful!
  • Nooooo, Connor!
  • This episode is intense! Holy ish! ๐Ÿซฃ๐Ÿ˜ฑ I did not remember that.

E11 The Wolf Inside

Comment on this fediverse post

  • The beginning montage is impressive. The look on Michael's face says it all.
  • Ash โค๏ธ
  • "An oppressive regime is by nature a fearful regime." Say it loud, Saru!
  • Tilly is getting more confident through her role as Killy.
  • Of course the Firewolf is Voq.
  • Sarek will know everything. Is that the moment that gives the rebels hope?
  • Tyler fighting Voq!! OMG! That's perfect.
  • Oh no, Ash! NOOO!
  • Saru to the rescue. He's strong!
  • Magic mushrooms. ๐Ÿ˜
  • The Emperor!
  • Michael's shock!
  • Lorca's grin!
  • So many reveals today!
  • This episode had me on the edge of my seat again.

E12 Vaulting Ambition

Comment on this fediverse post

  • One thing I ask myself every week: In all 4 seasons of Disco, have we ever seen the ship's warp core? I miss a good warp core shot.
  • Stamets and Stamets are fun.
  • L'Rell, you are cruel and I don't like you.
  • Why does everyone lie so weird on these bio beds? They always lie with their heads under the actual head piece.
  • Stamets and Culber โค๏ธ
  • Uh oh! Keep an eye on Mirror Stamets!
  • Ok. I knew Lorca was Mirror, and I admit I still kinda liked him. Until now. I forgot what a cruel ass he was. He needs to be stopped.
  • There are so many things happening in those episodes all the time that I forget to take notes. ๐Ÿ˜…

E13 What's Past is Prologue

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Landry!
  • Great escape, Michael!
  • Holy ish! ๐Ÿ˜จ I did not see that shot on Owosekun coming.
  • I like the disruptor effect. And I feel really bad for doing so.
  • Great speech by Saru. He will make a good captain
  • The look on Lorca's face when Michael turns herself over! I'm wondering if he actually believes her. But he looks so relieved, and happy.
  • Fantastic fight scene!
  • I wonder if we'll see Lorca back in the mycelial network one day.
  • Stamets and Tilly โค๏ธ
  • Is it survivor's guilt that makes Michael want to rescue everyone, even when it means to not respect their wishes? The emperor has every right to be as pissed as she is.
  • The ride through the mycelial network looked so retro. I loved it.
  • Oopsy moopsy! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ Theyโ€™re too late! Will we have some time travel again? Or how will they remedy that dire war situation? Will L'Rell come to the rescue?
  • I love the emperor's haircut btw.

E14 The War Without, The War Within

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Ash โค๏ธ
  • What an entry, Admiral.
  • Yo, girl! ๐Ÿฅ  ๐Ÿ”ซ ๐Ÿ’ช Bastard indeed!
  • Tilly, you wonderful human! ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  • I still don't like L'Rell. I wonder if I ever can.
  • Sarek and Gerogiou face off. Great stuff.
  • Great talk between Sarek and Michael. Maybe Sarek isn't such a big jerk after all.
  • There are caves on Qoโ€™noS big enough for the Discovery!? ๐Ÿคฏ
  • Tilly! โค๏ธ
  • Ash! ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  • Michael! ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  • Ash's story is heart breaking. But Michael's is too. And her decision is ultimately right.
  • Giving the emperor command of the Discovery. What could possibly go wrong. ๐Ÿซฃ

E15 Will You Take My Hand?

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Show her, Saru! ๐Ÿ’ช
  • Yeah, totally nothing could go wrong with the emperor as captain. ๐Ÿซฃ
  • Ash โค๏ธ
  • Tilly is a great friend.
  • Great fly in to Qo'noS.
  • Ash having fun is nice.
  • Clint Howard! Nice surprise.
  • Nope, literally nothing will go wrong.
  • Hmmโ€ฆ I catch myself having positive feelings for L'Rell. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿซข
  • Ash and Michael ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  • Is Sarek smiling?
  • "The only way to defeat fear is to tell it: No."
  • A good ending to a great season.

Season 1 review

Comment on this fediverse post

  • I seriously do not understand all the harsh feelings so many people seem to have towards Disco. It's Star Trek through and through. You just need to watch it.
  • This show is about Michael discovering who she is. It's about the inner workings of our crew much more than it is about external things. Therefore it may not be what we were used to see in Star Trek. But it is still very much what Star Trek has always been.
  • This season was really good. Especially considering the chaos behind the scenes.
  • Good bookends all around I think.
  • A few questions remain though. E. g. was there something planned with the black badges for season 1, but they dropped it because of all the bts shenanigans? Or was it a well planned tease and always planned for season 2?
  • Listening to podcasts from 2017/18 is so much fun. Hearing all the speculation when you know how everything turned out to be is such a fun experience.

Season 2

E01 Brother

Comment on this fediverse post

  • The opening montage is beautiful.
  • Dude! How big is Sarek's house? That stairway is weird. Looks like at an industrial complex.
  • The way young Spock is ducking when Sarek calls him... ๐Ÿฅบ It does not seem that he's too happy, poor boy.
  • "Damn, she's a beauty." (She is.)
  • Saru's sniffing! LOL
  • Tilly!! ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  • Great scene on the bridge where they work together to find a solution.
  • OMG! ๐Ÿชฉ Disco EV suits! ๐Ÿชฉ I hope they filmed some disco dance video in these things. Is something like that on the DVDs? Please! I want the red one for cosplay. Or dance nights. Or both.
  • uh-ohโ€ฆ Connolly, you're dead. Listen to Michael! โ€ฆ Told you so.
  • Reno!!
  • I think people don't have a problem with others intruding their private space because they know that no-one would do anything weird or bad. That's why quarters are unlocked and personal logs are so easily available for anyone to read/ listen to. It's also a handy story device.
  • Tilly is the absolute highlight of this episode.
  • So many great visuals, like when we fly alongside the Disco towards the Enterprise and see the corridor, or the asteroid field. ๐Ÿ˜

E02 New Eden

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Stamets! ๐Ÿฅบ I love Anthony Rapp's play!
  • Pike's hair is far from as great as in SNW. Very far. And I'm not even obsessed about his hair. Like at all. But somehow I like his looks better in SNW. Is it his hair?
  • ๐Ÿ˜ฑ Tilly! Omg!
  • Things are getting into motion.
  • Owosekun was part of the landing party because she grew up in a Luddite community. Did she get anything to do though except for opening the locked door? Is using a magnet knowledge only Luddites have? ๐Ÿค”
  • I loved that Pike went back to Jacob. I loved that that's all he wanted, he just wanted confirmation.
  • However, I am not happy with Pike's argument. Why does that colony fall under General Order 1? They have been taken away from Earth without their consent and kept in the dark about everything, including the fact that Earth still exists. They should have been informed about the truth. Their ancestors got taken from the 21st century, I imagine they can handle the truth.

E03 Point of Light

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Ash!! โค๏ธ (Finally!)
  • Amanda, you wonderful, amazing woman.
  • I don't like the beard. Nor that costume.
  • I do like the split scene though.
  • And I don't like L'Rell.
  • Don't mess with a mother, Kol-Sha.
  • Georgiou! Great entrance.
  • ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ฑ Those heads!
  • Yeah, I still don't know about L'Rell. Yes, "mother" is a fiercer title than "chancellor". But I still don't like her and that speech did nothing for me.
  • "The freaks are more fun." (I think so, too, Philippa.)
  • I like May. Can't wait to find out what she really wants.

E04 An Obol for Charon

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Number One, hello!
  • The food synthesizer doesn't say anything to Una? It obviously likes burgers and fries. ๐Ÿ”๐ŸŸ
  • The bridge crew sharing some time around the table was nice. Linus is cute.
  • Reno and Stamets are a fantastic pair! More please!
  • When did Saru and Michael become such close friends? What did I miss or forget?
  • David Bowie is canon. I don't care for anything else from now on. ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸŽค
  • All the bridge crew standing up for Saru ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  • Saru's quarters are an absolute dream place.
  • The science lab has turned into a very surreal place and I love that. Great scenes!

E05 Saints of Imperfection

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Great visuals of the torpedo heading towards the shuttle.
  • Thatโ€ฆ is not Spock. ๐Ÿ˜†
  • Georgiou is enjoying every second of this. And so do I.
  • Mary Wiseman!! ๐Ÿคฉ
  • Ash! โค๏ธ Looking quite fetching today.
  • I like the visual of the Discovery sinking into an ocean. Great vfx all around. The mycelial network looks super good too. ๐Ÿ˜
  • Hugh! โค๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  • Pike, stop being so rude to Ash!
  • The admiral rebuking Leland and Pike ๐Ÿคฃ
  • Good bye, May. You were cool.

E06 The Sound of Thunder

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Ash โค๏ธ
  • Saru is getting courageous. Challenging the captain like that.
  • That tea set Siranna uses is beautiful! ๐Ÿ˜
  • Love the Ba'ul character design. Looks like a mix of that creepy crawling girl of one of those horror films some years back, and Armus.
  • Whoa! Saru, you're freaking me out a bit.
  • For the whole episode I was expecting a meeting between Culber and Ash. I'm not looking forward to it, but it has to come.

E07 Light and Shadows

Comment on this fediverse post

  • A nice way of doing a "previously onโ€ฆ"
  • No cursing on duty. ๐Ÿ˜‚
  • Ash โค๏ธ My poor Ash having to deal with the consequences of things he didn't do. ๐Ÿ™ However, still no confrontation with Culber.
  • Michael's approach towards Vulcan looks so great.
  • Spock โค๏ธ๐Ÿฅบ
  • Sarek, you're impossible!
  • This probe looks like the things in The Matrix.
  • Commander Spock?
  • Oh no, Airiam ๐Ÿฅบ
  • Not sure we needed Leland to be responsible for the death of Michael's parents. Couldn't there be some other thing for him to have done?
  • Stamets and Tilly super team

E08 If Memory Serves

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Previously on Star Trekโ€ฆ That opening is great!
  • Ash โค๏ธ
  • A black hole - what a way to hide Talos IV.
  • No, the beard is not working. (I sound as if I didn't like beards. I do like beards quite a bit, I swear! ๐Ÿ˜…)
  • Ooh, Culber and Ash fighting. I really like the Culber story. I like how Stamets desperately tries to make everything as it was before, and how Culber doesn't even know who he is and needs to arrive in his body and his life again first.
  • Saru, you are an absolute gem!
  • Spock ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  • The actors playing young Michael and Spock are wonderful.
  • I love how Leland is constantly getting his ass kicked from all directions.

E09 Project Daedalus

Comment on this fediverse post

  • So, Starfleet had this AI that turned out to be deadly for everyone. Why did they do the same shit again 100 years later as shown in Picard season 3?
  • Admiral Cornwell is so great. I'm gonna miss her.
  • Good to see a bit more of Nhan.
  • Great exchange between Michael and Spock.
  • Also between Stamets and Spock.
  • "I have many talents." โค๏ธ
  • The ๐Ÿชฉ disco ๐Ÿชฉ EV suits are back!
  • Burnham, would you please help Nhan first?
  • Airiam! ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  • What an end to the episode. Love the no music only quiet waves over the end credits.

E10 The Red Angel

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Ash โค๏ธ
  • Indeed Tilly, the doors on Starfleet ships are a little funny.
  • Oooh! ๐Ÿคฉ That fly in on the Discovery is ๐Ÿ‘Œ
  • OMG! Spock! You're too funny.
  • I love how often this show is commenting on itself. Please never stop doing that.
  • Georgiou! You manipulative b. ๐Ÿคฃ
  • Sonequa Martin-Green is so good! In the scene where Leland tells Michael the truth about her parents' death, she is phenomenal.
  • Such a beautiful scene and conversation between Spock and Michael.
  • Ash + Michael โค๏ธ
  • Holy ish Leland! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ That was a bit sudden.

E11 Perpetual Infinity

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Is Leland Borg now?
  • Dr. B. reminds me of old Amy in that one Doctor Who episode. ๐Ÿ˜ข
  • "Time is the fire in which we burn." comes to mind.
  • Aaaash! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ
  • Yes, Georgiou, show him! ๐Ÿ’ช
  • "What we do now, here in this moment, has the power to determine the future."
  • I like that even though the Red Angel is all about Michael, it is not because she's the most important being in the universe. It is simply because her mother has been trying to get back to her.
  • Maybe Calypso is one of many potential future outcomes of the current events. One that we will not actually follow to see because the events do turn out differently for Discovery. Which will have Calypso play in an alternate timeline.

E12 Through the Valley of Shadows

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Ash is looking super hot today. โค๏ธ
  • I love that Michael doesn't get mad or irritated when Ash tells her about his son, but supports him.
  • I feel like Pike at the monastery feels like the SNW Pike for the first time.
  • That banter between Spock and Michael is funny. Love Ethan Peck!
  • Following the shuttle out of the shuttle bay into space slightly out of frame looked great.
  • Powerful Pike scene where he talks himself into taking the time crystal.
  • Ok, I may not hate L'Rell anymore.

E13 Such Sweet Sorrow, Part I

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Nice to see a docking scene. I really love those, in all the shows and films whenever they show them. They have something mundane and grounding about them.
  • No holographic communication is absolutely for the best. ๐Ÿคฃ Ask the DS9 people.
  • So, touching a time crystal locks in the future events the person touching it sees. Burnham touches the crystal and sees events. They should happen now. No matter what they try to prevent that. Even fleeing into the future should not prevent that. But, spoiler alert, what she sees will not happen. I don't like things like that. Don't make a big deal out of that fact one episode and then turn it on its head the next. ๐Ÿ˜’
  • I like snarky and funny Georgiou.
  • short glimpse of Ash โค๏ธ
  • Stamets and Culber ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  • Is Sarek fighting to keep his composure? ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  • Ash and Michael ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  • Lovely to see some of the bridge crew record their good bye messages.
  • I really really am no fan of all those speeches.
  • But oh my god the bit between Pike and Spock is great. "There are no words."
  • All the bridge crew standing in parade rest for Pike was nice and better than any speech.
  • Ooh, I wanna be winked at by Pike too. ๐Ÿ˜Š

E14 Such Sweet Sorrow, Part II

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Saru's warning about Leland being no human being was really powerful.
  • I am so glad they brought Reno into the future. She's gold.
  • I want more Dr Pollard!
  • All the shuttles escorting and protecting Michael is beautiful. ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  • Ash to the rescue! โค๏ธ
  • Georgiou and Nhan opening the door, Number One and Cornwell working on another door and the torpedo, L'Rell and Siranna leading their fleets, Michael leading the way into the future โ€” so many women being absolutely vital to this mission's success. Not to forget earlier contributions by Reno, Tilly, Po, Dr Pollard and her team, and others. That is amazing!! I am usually not very nitpicky about that; I love men and I love seeing them do their thing. Please, more amazing men in my tv! But this is very very special. ๐Ÿ’ช
  • So now the time crystals only show a possible future? Lame. ๐Ÿ˜’
  • Clip show? Really?
  • The fight in the hallway between Leland, Georgiou, and Nhan looked so amazing! Did they have a rotating set?
  • Ok, ok, that was a great L'Rell scene on her ship. I wished she was like that from the beginning.
  • All those good byes! ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  • The vfx of the time travel is a nice callback.
  • Love the end credits music.

Season 2 review

Comment on this fediverse post

  • People complain that there's a lot of crying in Discovery. People cry in that show, yes. Who ever cries in other Trek shows? Not a lot of people. And that is the actual problem.
People cry. All the time. I cry. And you cry probably too. Not showing it on tv is hiding a very normal and healthy reaction of the human body.
I don't think there's a lot of crying on Discovery and certainly not in uncalled for situations. These people go through a lot and why shouldn't they cry? It shows that they are living, caring, feeling beings.
Also, Michael is not the only one crying, though she gets accused the most. Ash is crying a lot too and I am here for it! Let men cry on tv! Let them cry when they hurt. Not just physically but emotionally, like Ash. Or Culber and Stamets.
Plan for my next re-watch: keep a tally on crying. I bet the numbers will be way smaller than people want to make us believe.
  • Season 2 was a bit convoluted at times. E. g. I could not explain the signals to anyone, or when the Angel is Dr. B. and when it is Michael. Throwing in Control just adds to the complexity. How did Control turn sentient anyway? (No need to explain it to me though, thanks.)
  • But I think they came out of the behind the scenes shenanigans quite ok and taking the Disco into the far future was certainly the right decision.
  • This show continues to be one where the characters are discovering themselves more and more. They are becoming themselves, they are not yet there. This series is a journey.
  • Some people say there isn't any chemistry between Michael and Ash. I think we're watching different shows. I love them together.
  • I said it in another post, but I want to repeat it here: re-watching Disco is giving me a new and deeper appreciation for this show. It is so good. Of course not everything is perfect, or working, but what ever is?

Season 3

E01 That Hope is You, Part I

Comment on this fediverse post

  • I want programmable matter. And I want an alarm clock like that. ๐Ÿฆœ
  • What a great great sequence of Michael crawling out from under the rubble, understanding that her plan worked, and realising what it all really means. Goodness, Sonequa Martin-Green is so good. LOVED her acting of Michael's emotional response and how she talked herself out of it and into action. She has saved all life, but has lost everyone and everything she ever knew. That's damn big. This is a great episode for her. For both, the actor and the character.
  • Burnham's look at Book while he wraps his handkerchief around her armโ€ฆ and Ash seems suddenly forgotten. ๐Ÿคฃ I don't entirely blame her. (Don't tell Jordan I said that. ๐Ÿคซ)
  • Aditya Sahil is so precious. โค๏ธ
  • I love feeling feelings. ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  • I always love when we get to see more than just Starfleet life.
  • I really love how sci-fi the design is. We are so used to warp drive and transporters, as if it was realistic. But programmable matter, man!! ๐Ÿคฏ

E02 Far From Home

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Detmer's hair is suddenly quite a bit longer, isn't it? They did spend a whole year in that wormhole. ๐Ÿคฃ
  • I loved how during the ship's roll the camera was moving from right to left behind the captain's chair. Made for a great visual effect.
  • Don't let a person with a head injury walk to sickbay alone!!
  • Everyone is so busy, no one really sees what's up with Detmer. I don't blame them. They do have their hands full.
  • Georgiou is extra bitchy today.
  • Ew! Leland goo!
  • And they are back: my favourite bickering pair, Reno and Stamets.
  • I liked Kal and I hate that he got killed. Especially so horribly. ๐Ÿ˜ข I liked that alien design. I wanna see more of them.
  • How lucky for Georgiou that Zareh wanted to make it slow and didn't keep shooting her to death.
  • You know, there is a lot of crying in this show. By me. ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

  • Great reunion scene. I feel previous shows would not have stayed that long. This show is about the connections between people much more than any other Trek show. That's what makes it unique and special. ๐Ÿ–ค
  • Having Michael be on her own for a whole year was another great decision. That way her character could change and grow without having to go through that on the show. It of course also gives the great opportunity to have her question her place in the world and discover more about herself.
  • I LOVE that they didn't make Michael and Book a couple before now. This also gives us the chance to see them fall in love. ๐Ÿ˜
  • Captain Saru!
  • Love the hair, too! For both of them, Tilly and Burnham.
  • Detmer's Look at Book! ๐Ÿ˜
  • "A viewscreen. How quaint." A running gag needs running, I agree. ๐Ÿ˜œ
  • Love Adira from the spot.
  • Classic Trek solution regarding the humans. Complete with the fanfare. โค๏ธ

E04 Forget Me Not

Comment on this fediverse post

  • At this point I believe the vfx and design people just don't care anymore about anything and embrace the funky Trek looks all the way. ๐Ÿ˜† Dude, that symbiont is huge! Has it always been that big? (I'm here for the funky Trek looks, btw.)
  • Let's go to Trill!
  • "Don't say anything annoyingly inspirational. That makes me nuts." You and me both, Adira.
  • Hello Zora!
  • Culber messing up the last line of his Haiku โ€” was that scripted? It felt like it was a genuine actor's mishap.
  • Guardian Xi, my new hero.
  • Linus handing Georgiou that popcorn ๐Ÿฟ ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ˜
  • It took me until after the episode was over to realise that Michael was not at the dinner. Why did Saru not wait for her and Adira's return? It's such an important event and he wouldn't wait for her?

E05 Die Trying

Comment on this fediverse post

  • The relief and excitement of the crew when they were entering the containment field โ€” I felt it too.
  • They're such ship nerds. Love the Voyager J. And of course the USS Nog, Eisenberg class.
  • Georgiou and Kovich are a great pair.
  • Nhan is awesome only giving her name and rank. She's a security officer after all.
  • Why did they not try to contact the people on the Tikhov first? Or did I miss that? Couldn't they do it because of the ion storm?
  • I would have loved to learn more about the Barzan here. I couldn't quite understand why Nhan couldn't get the man to open the vault for them.
  • Empathy is a fucking strength! And Michael has empathy. Lots of it. โค๏ธ
  • Good bye Nhan. See you soon!

E06 Scavengers

Comment on this fediverse post

  • It's cool to see how the Disco crew gets updated. They're such nerds.
  • "The hell yeah we do."
  • Hi Grudge!
  • Ooh, hello Book! โ˜บ๏ธ
  • "You had me at unsanctioned mission."
  • Oh Michael, have you learned nothing? Ignoring direct orders is not a good idea.
  • However, I like it. It's realistic. Changing one's habits is not a straight road. There are setbacks. Two steps forward, one step back. Also, Michael's been on her own, in a wild universe, and outside Starfleet for one year, which is a very long time. She's now used to a different way of solving problems. And then this is about Book. She's in love. Of course she's risking her career to rescue Book.
  • She said "love" alright.
  • Son? Sun? What???
  • "Did you eat her?"
  • "I love me."
  • Great quotes this episode.
  • Linus is so cute! โค๏ธ
  • Michael and her lovers like the turbo lift, eh? โค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธ
  • Admiral Vance is great! I love how he handles Michael and Saru.

E07 Unification III

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Michael and Book โค๏ธโค๏ธ
  • USS Yelchin ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  • Great conversation between Tilly and Michael.
  • Michael's look when she heard "Ambassador Spock". ๐Ÿ˜Š
  • That smile on Vance's face. Not only did he realise that Michael as Spock's sister was of great value in this situation. I think for the first time he acknowledges her value as a Starfleet officer with her persisting on what she thinks is the right thing to do. (At least that's my head canon now.)
  • ๐Ÿ˜ญ Spock! ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  • T'Rina's dress is beautiful! I especially love the collar and the undershirt.
  • I really like the Qowat Milat. I want more stories with them. Books. There should be books.
  • Dr. B's clothes are cool too.
  • I love the talk between Tilly and Stamets in the spore chamber. ๐Ÿ˜†
  • I like the solution to the discussion, that Michael takes back her request in order to protect the still very fragile peace on Ni'var.
  • "You know where to find me." ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  • So great how the bridge crew support Tilly. No infighting in Starfleet. (Except when Riker is involved. ๐Ÿคฃ) It reminds me of the episode of Lower Decks where Rutherford tries to change divisions so he could spend time with Tendi. Everybody was cheering him on. I love that!
  • The budding romance between T'Rina and Saru is so visible and sweet. I can't wait for season 5!

E08 Sanctuary

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Culber is too cool for Georgiou. ๐Ÿ˜‚
  • Ossyra is definitely bad news. I like her hair cut.
  • I am not a fan of the layer of latex (or whatever) on the Orion actors' faces though. It looks wrong.
  • Poor Linus. Always something with him.
  • Adira โค๏ธ
  • Georgiou in the med bay is hilarious!
  • I love how Stamets is tending to Adira.
  • Detmer!!! ๐Ÿ’ช
  • Tilly went full XO/ personal assistant. Loved that.
  • Another classic Trek story. Never the worst of stories.
  • I did not remember that season being so episodic. I like it.

E09 Terra Firma, Part 1

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Time travel definitely gives me a head ache too. Wow. What? ๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ๐Ÿคฃ
  • Love the Kelvin timeline shoutout and the TNG season 1 uniform.
  • Tilly is the best. โค๏ธ
  • Don't be an ass to Tilly, woman! ๐Ÿ˜
  • Saru getting a lesson. It's his learning season isn't it.
  • The conversation between Michael and Philippa in the gym made me think about the mirror universe and that I really like it. I don't need or even want to spend so much time in it. But the concept itself is the real interesting thing for me.
  • Loved the good bye scene between Saru, Tilly, and Georgiou. For reasons that have to do with my point above.
  • I love that Michael and Philippa's last outing together is another long walk through a landscape. In the pilot it was a desert, here it is snow.
  • The soup headline and the photo besides it in the newspaper should have given Carl's identity away right there, but when I first saw the episode I did not look at the newspaper, and so I remained clueless.
  • Georgiou's (or Michelle Yeoh's) determined face after she realised what the door could mean is great!
  • I like Carl.
  • Loved the aerial silk show and scene.
  • I also love the costumes. And Georgiou's hair cut.
  • Insane Michael is insane! Well acted, as always.
  • "Do not confuse growth with weakness."
  • Georgiou's mind is racing all the time. She's doubting, and scheming. What an exhausting life!
  • This whole two parter is what I like about the mirror universe. The thought experiment of nature vs nurture. It's a fascinating question.
  • Does Owosekun have tears in her eyes?

E10 Terra Firma, Part 2

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Oooh! A mirror opening credit! I like it.
  • Wow! That make up on Sonequa Martin-Green at the beginning, when she was in really bad shape, is great!
  • I am still as excited to hear and see the Guardian of Forever as I was when this ep first aired.
  • "I read the field manual." ๐Ÿ˜† I loved that whole story line. I'm a bit sad it was so short, though.
  • I want more about the Temporal Wars. Where are the books? ๐Ÿ˜œ The DTI books are already on my TBR though.
  • What I love about Trek stories, and many others too, is when they show how a bad guy can be turned and be redeemed. This is what a good story should be. Story is not reality. But it reminds us of our own compassion. We should show it more often. In reality.
So yes, Emperor Georgiou was a tyrant and a murderer. But she changed. And though that does not make her deeds undone, it makes her make different choices now. If she were a real person we shouldn't let her go. But this is a fictional story, which serves a different purpose, as I said above. The last scene still seems a bit overboard in my opinion. I will, however, miss Michelle Yeoh and her character, obviously.

E11 Su'kal

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Papa Stamets is mad at Gray. ๐Ÿ˜†โค๏ธ
  • Those in-badge tricorder projections are looking weird coming from that one point on the chest.
  • That wink Book gives! ๐Ÿซ
  • The Verubin nebula is beautiful! Love the homage to Vera Rubin too.
  • In the projection, at first that planet looks a bit like the Death Star thanks to that first crater, doesn't it.
  • Great scene between Stamets and Culber about the latter going on that mission.
  • I love the friendship between Tilly and Burnham.
  • Tilly in the chair! Loved the whole scene, including the Trek fanfare.
  • Where can I get Michael's awesome red coat? ๐Ÿ˜ Love that she's Trill. (I love the Trill.) LOVE seeing Doug Jones without makeup.
  • Anyone else getting Labyrinth vibes from the room with the stairs?
  • OMG! Tilly! What a first day in the chair! You've got this!
  • Su'kal is so cute and the actor is great!
  • Beautiful scene between the elder and Saru. ๐Ÿฅบ
  • First encounter with Ossyra: Well done, Tilly! ๐Ÿ’ช
  • Ossyra is an evil person, but she's got style. I still love her hair.

E12 There is a Tideโ€ฆ

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Vance is very cautious. I like that. The Federation has a lot to loose and he's making sure they don't.
  • I love seeing Book and Michael work together.
  • Kenneth Mitchell!
  • I really like Ossyra's necklace. That big crystal looks cool.
  • Ah, the apple scene. A classic ever since. Love it.
  • Tilly and the crew doing their thing and outsmarting the Chain. ๐Ÿ’ช
  • Vance is great. Though I don't understand why he's saying all these things to Ossyra. I understand how desperate the Federation is, but putting the Chain on a pedestal like he's doing? No, I don't agree. I do love how he negotiates though. He's thorough and does not make dangerous compromises.
  • Ossyra showing her real face back on the Discovery. My heart breaks for Aurellio.
  • Ryn! Noooo! ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  • Michael making the hard call when she's shooting Stamets out into space. She's learned her lessons. She'll be an amazing captain.
  • Zoraaaaaa! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

E13 That Hope is You, Part 2

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Hello Gray! ๐Ÿ˜ญ Tears and goosebumps moment.
  • Saru and Su'kal's scenes are so beautiful.
  • Love this bridge crew!
  • I like that Adira's holo species is only painted on. As if the programme didn't have enough juice in it to make it "real".
  • There's a whole city inside Discovery.
  • "She's a queen!" ๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ›
  • Great fight between Ossyra and Michael.
  • Nothing like a mad switching of chips/ discs from their slits into another to save the ship. ๐Ÿ˜†
  • Finally we get to see Disco's warp core โ€” and engine room! After three seasons!
  • What a weight Su'kal has to carry! ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  • Bill Irwin is wonderful in that role!
  • Lt. Sahil!! I loved to see him again. Such a beautiful scene.
  • Captain Michael Burnham! ๐Ÿคฉ
  • "In a very real sense, we are all aliens on a strange planet. We spend most of out lives reaching out and trying to communicate. If during our whole lifetime, we could reach out and really communicate with just two people, we are indeed very fortunate." - Gene Roddenberry

Season 3 review

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Seeing Michael as Captain sit in the chair was absolutely wonderful.
  • I totally accept the reason for the Burn and the 125 (or so) year old Su'kal. I totally accept a non-corporeal Gray. I am watching Star Trek after all. That's what I'm here for.
  • I wished they didn't make Saru suddenly and seemingly out of the blue struggle with his emotions so much during the last few episodes. I think all this wasn't necessary at all to explain his wish to take care of Su'kal for a while.
  • That said, I enjoyed this season a lot. I think it was the most coherent of the three.
  • Love all the new characters.
  • OMG and all the costumes are simply stunning! If I could I would have Gersha Phillips and her team be my personal tailors.
  • The actors are simply fantastic. So so good! Great characters portrayed by amazing actors wearing stunning costumes working in beautiful sets enhanced by gorgeous vfx. This show is a feast for the eyes. ๐Ÿ˜

Season 4

E01 Kobayashi Maru

Comment on this fediverse post

  • A very movie like beginning wirh Book's ship heading out, doing some moves, and heading towards that planet. All the while only this playful music playing.
  • Really good scene where a people voice their concerns about the Federation's intentions. We may know they're the good guys, but in their experience they are not.
  • Book and Michael's back and forth is always so fun to whitness.
  • In that chase that planet reminded me of the one in the new season 5 trailerโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ‘€
  • LOVE Adira and Stamets' personal "Warp particles" moment! ๐Ÿ˜
  • I really like the look of the new uniforms. But I also like that cool leather jacket.
  • Awww, Book โค๏ธ Michael
  • Big day for Starfleet with the Academy opening again after 125 years.
  • Great intro to Laira Rillak.
  • Archer's Theme! ๐Ÿ˜ข One of my top favourite pieces of Stat Trek music.
  • Tilly's face when Rillak came on board! ๐Ÿ˜†
  • "A question doesn't imply auestioning, Captain." Love that. Because it's true.
  • "There will always be those who fear what they do not understand." Truth!
  • I really love Su'kal.
  • For a second I believed Nalas would get through this alive. ๐Ÿ˜ข
  • Ooh, Rillak touching a sore spot.
  • ๐Ÿ˜ญ Kwejian destroyed โ€” what a horrible thing to see for Book and everyone!

E02 Anomaly

Comment on this fediverse post

  • I like that they talk about gravitational waves.
  • Such a beautiful moment between Tilly and Saru.
  • What's up with Tilly's hair? It's suddenly longer only a few hours later, at most.
  • Soong namedrop. No Trek show without a Soong. ๐Ÿ˜†
  • Michael's quarters are life goals.
  • Tilly's hair is indeed all over the place.
  • Why does Michael give the command on when to hit the wave? She's not the surfer.
  • An unpredictable adversary like this anomaly is really scary.
  • Have I mentioned before how much I love the costumes in this show?

E03 Choose to Live

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Momma Burnham is back, yay! I like her. What about a Qowat Milat book set in the 32nd century?
  • I love Tilly this episode.
  • Wait a minuteโ€ฆ One scene we say hello to Guardian Xi (Hi ๐Ÿค—), and when we come back to sick bay the thing has already happened? We didn't even see it start? I remember a scene where Xi is standing between the two beds with one hand on Adira and one on Gray. Am I imagining things? This was not in the episode though. I'm confused.
  • More awesome costumes.
  • Poor Stamets, he's having such a frustrating day.
  • ๐Ÿ˜ญ Book!
  • Hello and welcome back, Gray!
  • Watching this season again it's interesting watching Book. For so long it seems Michael and the others can bring him back and keep him safe. But it is working in him always and he will fall back eventually. Which will be hard to watch, but I like that they are doing it. The path through grief is not linear.
  • Michael's quarters are definitely life goals man.

E04 All Is Possible

Comment on this fediverse post

  • I love how Culber says to Tilly: "Go, get inspired!"
  • Grey being so confident is such a contrast to Adira. I like how he literally pushes them out into the world to explore without him.
  • Hoo boy, poor Tilly. Tough assignment she's got there. Very Galileo 7, is it not? Poor Lt. Callum.
  • Are the Cs the new red shirts? ๐Ÿง We had Connor, Connolly and now Callum who all died rather quickly. One of them even twice.
  • T'Rina โค๏ธ Saru
  • Love the Enterprise love!
  • The thing between Book and Culber is so good. I love that Book's grief is coming in waves. I love that it's not gone yet. I love everything about it even though of course it breaks my heart. I love how very slowly there seems to be some understanding growing between the two.
  • On first watching this episode when it first aired, I didn't like the whole Tilly and the cadets bit. But now I do. I really like the cadets and wished we could see more of them. But too much time may have passed. I still hope we'll meet them again in the Academy show. I want to know where they are now.
  • Ok, confession time: This is the first time I really rolled my eyes on the fact that it's Michael who is the centre of it. Is there no other person suitable to be on this committee? It's important to me that you don't get me wrong, Michael is one of my favourite characters, she's the centre of the show, she's the hero, love it. But I wished that for once the writers wouldn't have made her the solution here.
  • "Articles of the Federation" is one of my top favourite Trek novels and I LOVE that we get the president of the Federation and the politics around her in a show more than ever before. I enjoy Rillak and T'Rina and their maneuvering so much.

E05 The Examples

Comment on this fediverse post

  • USS Janeway!!! NSS T'Pau!!! ๐Ÿคฉ
  • Tarka's entrance is something. LOL I like the character and the actor. He's a pompous ass. But I like when things get disturbed and feathers are ruffled.
  • I like how they inserted Reno here and wished they had found a way to do more of it earlier and before she comes back later this season.
  • Michael dressing that magistrate down ๐Ÿ‘Œ
  • Somehow I'm not sure what to say about the Examples themselves. Other than that Felix (and his actor) impressed me. He has this grace and calmness, or groundedness, about him that I really admire. I would like to be able to live that too one day.
  • Tarka you calculating and manipulating ass. I'll never forgive you that.

E06 Stormy Weather

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Gray alone in the lounge, starting to talk to Zora is a great scene. Itโ€˜s the scene we never got in TNG, where the civilians must have felt similar.
  • Dr Pollard! โค๏ธ
  • Ensign Cortez (the poor guy)! It is the Cs! They are the new red shirts. Has anyone documented this somewhere? Is that only in Discovery or in other shows as well? Am I on to something here? โ€ฆ OMG! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ Culber died too!
  • "You bore witness. That is something." A very important thing, bearing witness! (One of my top favourite Doctor Who episodes is "Demons of the Punjab", which I was reminded of by Saru's statement.)
  • I love a good walk down the corridor in slow motion before battle. ๐Ÿ˜Ž And sparks. ๐Ÿ’ฅ
  • Great scene between Book and Saru at the end. And great scenes between Book and his father.

E07 โ€ฆBut to Connect

Comment on this fediverse post

  • "We always mean well to ourselves. The problem is what that means for others."
  • Communication and diplomacy are important in normal times. And they are even more important in not normal times. Even more important. Because it is in those not normal times where they are needed the most.
  • Who exactly got invited to this assembly? Who has the right to vote? Why does Michael have a right to vote? Is she speaking for Starfleet? ๐Ÿคจ I'm confused.
  • Oh the heartbreak! ๐Ÿ’” I am fully on Michael's side of the argument. But damn that was hard for her to do.
  • First glimpse into Tarka's story. Another heartbreak.
  • Saru โค๏ธ T'Rina, and her looks at him are wonderful.
  • The whole thing with Zora was great. I loved that mediation session. Well written and well executed.
  • That Book leaves Grudge with Michael is saying so much. I love that. I love that they never stop loving each other through this whole thing, and that Michael never gives up on Book.

E08 All In

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Vance is looking soโ€ฆ sheepish? Is that the right word? at the dressing down. ๐Ÿ˜†
  • You can see Vance is planning something right from the moment when Rillak gives her orders to Discovery.
  • I like Haz Mazaro's Karma Barge. And I like Haz.
  • Joann "Oh Wow" Owosekun! Wooo! ๐Ÿ’ช
  • Book's look at Michael when she says she wants to inspect the isolynium! โค๏ธ
  • The looks and words between Book and Michael when they were the only ones left at the game. ๐Ÿฅบ
  • Tarka is so self absorbed. He thinks his pain is the worst and no one could ever feel a loss like he does. It doesn't even occur to him that others might have lost someone close to them, too.
  • Ahhh, I like Rillak. She's cool.

E09 Rubicon

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Nhaaaaan!! It's so good to have her back. If only for one episode. "Yum yum!"
  • Also, I need this eyeshadow now. Rillak is wearing it, Nhan is wearing it. Must be quite en vogue in 3190.
  • Oh sweet sweet Saru! โค๏ธ Him talking to Tโ€˜Rina was so sweet. And his advice seeking from Culber is even sweeter.
  • Tarka, that ass! He's been using Book from day 1. And Book is letting him! Book thinks he's got Tarka under control, but gets outmaneuvered all the time -- and still doesn't change course. Well, he at least wanted to take a break for a week, but then Tarka sabotaged that.

E10 The Galactic Barrier

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Dr. Hirai is my new favourite.
  • Vance's look when Burnham wants him and Rillak to go with her. ๐Ÿคฃ
  • Love the scene between Vance and Rillak. Love the photography, the silent moments. I want a Rillak origin story novel.
  • Wow! That was a long intro before the title sequence!
  • Oros โค๏ธ
  • Tarka is an arrogant ass and he knows it. Doesn't make him less human (you know what I mean) or less worthy of our compassion. Because compassion is what distinguishes good people from bad ones.
  • "If we can't communicate with each other, what chance do we have with them?"

E11 Rosetta

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Yes! Another slow motion walk down the corridor! ๐Ÿ˜Ž
  • They are exploring a strange new world!
  • And they have a riddle to solve! Love a classic Trek episode like that!
  • Keyla! ๐Ÿซ‚
  • Reno is finally back!
  • "No one's always okay, kid."
  • Steamed bananas! The replicator makes steamed bananas! I love this show!
  • Oh Book! ๐Ÿ˜”
  • Yep, Dr. Hirai is definitely my new favourite.
  • "Sometimes empathy can be uncomfortable." "And it's the only way to connect, to find common ground for communication." This 5000!
  • The end is so good. Nothing ever goes right with that Tarka dude around. ๐Ÿ˜†

E12 The Ten-C

Comment on this fediverse post

  • There is a big sky light thing in the bio lab? Cool!
  • Tarka is a goddamned a-hole! Masks all fall one day, this was his time.
  • Poor Dr. Hirai! He was so enthusiastic to go and talk to the 10-C and them Rillak makes him stay on the ship.
  • I really love the design of the 10-C and how they communicate. Truly alien.

E13 Coming Home

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Federation HQ is the coolest ass thing I've ever seen. Warping through space like a spear?? Consisting of modules who are also warp capable?? ๐Ÿ˜Ž
  • Tilly is back! Her hair is looking much better than earlier this season.
  • Great cut between Tilly in Federation HQ to Burnham on the Discovery.
  • The presto chango button. (I find it funny.)
  • Phew! Of course Book came around. He's a good man. โค๏ธ
  • Even though Tarka is that selfish, arrogant a-hole I still felt sad for him and loved that Book held him for a bit.
  • T'Rina โ€” bad ass woman.
  • I still like the spore jump effect. It's cool.
  • General Ndoye going into her mission in her full uniform. ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  • Michael after book's transport signal disappeared! ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  • "My mom and I didn't have an easy relationship at all, but I always knew she loved me." ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  • I love those moments in Federation HQ between Vance and Tilly.
  • "He was my 'one'." ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  • Good speech from Book.
  • Saru and T'Rina โ€” they're holding hands! ๐Ÿ˜
  • When I first watched this episode I got the feeling from all the build up they were doing, that the president of Earth must be someone special. Either a character we know or an actor. I was expecting something big. But then the shuttle door opened and I was like "Who's that?". ๐Ÿคฃ Did I have to know that person?? She clearly was not an experienced actor. But who was she then??? I had to do an internet search to find out who she was. So yeah, that did not have any special impact on me unfortunately. Cool gesture and message for sure! I wished they would have chosen someone that had a more global impact and message, though. But Star Trek still is an American tv show, isn't it. ๐Ÿ˜‰
  • Anyway, ending with an image of Earth showing an unusual angle was cool. Or am I missing something here too? ๐Ÿ˜…

Season 4 review

Comment on this fediverse post

  • The influence Covid had on everything is very very visible and should always be kept in mind when we talk about this season.
  • The theme of how important empathy, compassion and communication is, is now more important than it even was 2 years ago. Listening is so so important. Listening carefully, asking questions if necessary, and not jumping to conclusions immediately or throwing a tantrum and being an asshole.
  • In that regard, this season was probably the most trek-y of them all.
  • I love the character development.
  • I love that some of the actors got a chance to do other projects during the season. That gave their characters a chance to develop even off screen, especially Tilly.
  • Lt. Christopher was a good replacement for Bryce though. He's got a C-name though and I am scared for him now.
  • Because the Cs being the new redshirts must be a thing, right? No-one commented on that at all, but I'll be watching the casualties' names next season, that's for sure. ๐Ÿง
  • Has anyone counted the number of "uncertainties" though? ๐Ÿซฃ๐Ÿ˜‡

Season 5

E01 Red Directive

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Have we ever seen a warp bubble from the outside? That's looking cool!
  • I want that cocktail! ๐Ÿธ
  • T'Rina is funny, and confusing Saru with her logic and Vulcan kind of encouragement.
  • First thing that popped into my mind upon seeing the infinity room: The Matrix!
  • Red Directive who dis?
  • Poor DISCO crew has to stop partying for some mysterious mission.
  • I love a good bridge gets ready for departure scene.
  • Daft Punk on a mission. ๐Ÿ˜‡
  • Ooooh, transparent guy? What's up with him? Is that a hint?
  • Interesting dynamics between Moll and L'ak. She seems to be the driving force, and he seems to have reservations.
  • Kovich doesn't care if people get killedโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ˜ณ What is on that ship???
  • A dead Romulan in his cool maxi shoulder pad uniform! I always loved that look.
  • Michael having fun in a space suit. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
  • Enter Captain Rayner. Whooo!
  • I love Gallo's hair. I need to call my hairdresser.
  • Greatest entering the bridge ever! Michael Burnham, badass!!
  • Michael always has an idea, even if it hurts.
  • Book!!! But Michael's look is not good. Book is looking more excited.
  • Ensign Tribble is back! I find it funny seeing it fall off the wall.
  • I LOVE Michael and Book talking Courier!
  • Michael seems very insecure about her relationship with Book at this moment. And Book follows her lead instead of being clear about his feelings. I think he's much more secure in where he stands (wanting to be with her), but he loves her too much to do anything she doesn't want. ๐Ÿซ ๐Ÿ’”
  • Kovich is "not at liberty to share details"โ€ฆ Who is he and who is his superior?
  • Fred?
  • That exchange between Tilly and the very handsome guy was just cute. Cute! I love everything about his behaviour. ๐Ÿ˜ I hope we will see him again in Academy.
  • Ah! There's the problemโ€ฆ
  • "I love the feeling of interrupting something." That grumpy look. I love Rayner already. ๐Ÿคฃ Poor guy totally being the third wheel here.
  • How long did it take for Book to arrive on Discovery, sorting everything out, and them getting to Q'mau. Must have been really quick if Moll and L'ak only just arrived there too.
  • Fred!!
  • Self sealing stembolts! โค๏ธ
  • Out of sync Book and Michael is sad to see.
  • Vance is the best! ๐Ÿ˜
  • Oooh, Dr. Vellek's journal must not fall into the wrong handsโ€ฆ treasure hunt!
  • Love the split screen between Rayner, Michael, and Book. ๐Ÿ˜†
  • Book is scared for Michael. ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  • Whoooo! Discovery and Antares blocking the rubble is an amazing move.
  • Book totally following Michael's lead. ๐Ÿ˜ญ He doesn't want to break up, but she's running away. ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  • T'Rina proposing to Saru!! ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  • Michael's not loosing a second. She's so into that mission she can't be bothered to stop to get cleaned up.
  • That isโ€ฆ that isโ€ฆ that isโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ˜ฒ OMG! It is!!!
  • Let's fly!

  • Michael not wanting to harm Rayner is showing who she is. โค๏ธ
  • I'm so glad Tilly is back on the Discovery too! Her funny remarks are so great to have around.
  • Hugh! โค๏ธ He's so good for Book.
  • And Saru is good for Michael.
  • I love the stone hand and head in the woods. Right out of a treasure hunt adventure film.
  • Action Saru!! Damn!!
  • Book has found his purpose when he found out who Moll is.
  • I love Saru's quarters. ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒบ
  • Love Rayner zipping his jacket shut and the hint of the Trek fanfare when he said yes.

E03 Jinaal

Comment on this fediverse post

  • I love how futuristic Stafleet HQ and the ships look.
  • Burnham telling Rayner do do one-on-ones with the crew is she telling him what's important to her and he better go along. This is going to be good. ๐Ÿ˜†
  • Reno!!! Finally!
  • Guardian Xi, helloooo. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
  • Ooh, a riddle. But a lame one.
  • A zhian'tara. Exciting.
  • T'Rina is so great.
  • Ah, here we go. ๐Ÿ˜ Tilly enters "to facilitate introductions" between Rayner and the crew. Let the fun begin.
  • Tilly is brave talking to Rayner like that. She's badass like that. Yes, badass is an adjective now.
  • "Wow. This guy really works out." ๐Ÿ˜† Wilson Cruz as Jinaal is killing it. Twice. He's so amazing!
  • Duvin sowing seeds of doubt in Saru.
  • Cool to have Discovery mention the Dominion war and thus connecting back to the 24th century more and more.
  • Tilly's look at Rhys after his meeting with Rayner! ๐Ÿคฃ
  • Dr Pollard! So good to see her. Linus being Linus. ๐Ÿ˜ Reno being Reno. ๐Ÿ˜† And what did Gallo say before that remark on drag racing?
  • Gray and Adria breaking up is awkward and cute at the same time.
  • Oh wow, it got pretty dark in that quarry pretty quickly. ๐Ÿคจ And where is Jinaal hiding all of a sudden?
  • Tilly! Doing what she does best: Talk. She's amazing.
  • T'Rina rocks. Saru doesn't know what hit him. ๐Ÿ˜†
  • Slug-o-Cola!
  • Tilly's great with Rayner, and Rayner's cool too. He listens. And seems to think about what she says too.
  • Culber starting to struggle again. Didn't we have that before, in season 2?
  • LOVE Michael doing the Vulcan meditation!
  • Uh ohโ€ฆ Moll has breached Trill's apparently not so great security and planted a bug on Adira.

E04 Face the Strange

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Moll and L'ak having this romantic moment while a guy is dying painfully next to them because they poisened him is pretty macabre. Not liking it.
  • Why is this spider so loud? Absolute design flaw.
  • I am increasingly disliking these personal transporters. They are annoying me. It's silly having them tap them twice to plop to wherever. Just let them walk, please!
  • First three points on that list all negative. But don't worry, this is a good episode. Just read on. ๐Ÿ˜‰
  • Time Jump โ€” Red Angel wormhole
  • Time Jump โ€” Shipyards
  • Time Jump โ€” Battle with Control
  • The Krenim! Temporal Cold War!
  • Rayner is so confused about Disco's past. LOL
  • Time Jump โ€” Ossyra's attack
  • Daft Punk army ๐Ÿ˜†
  • Time Jump โ€” Zora is all alone
  • "Or is this another dream?" ๐Ÿ˜ข
  • Burnham and Rayner connecting over a dusty captain's chair.
  • Time Jump โ€” somewhere before the new uniforms (S2? S3?)
  • Reno and Stamets are a great pair.
  • Time Jump โ€” somewhere between S3 and S4 I assume
  • Now this episode is starting to feel like "Magic to Make the Sanest Man go Mad", which I'm down for.
  • Whooo, yes, Book taking his shirt off is distracting me too, Michael.
  • Time Jump โ€” S1
  • Poor confused Linus. But what a fantastic reaction! ๐Ÿคฃ
  • We had Voq fight Voq. Now we have Michael fight Michael. Did we need that? No. Do I still kinda like it? Yes. And Sonequa Martin-Green is brilliant as angry Burnham.
  • Stamets being "very grumpy, just absolutely irate." ๐Ÿคฃ
  • Aw, Rayner! โค๏ธ
  • Airiam! ๐Ÿ˜ญ And Bryce!
  • Of course Airiam would give her life to save the crew. She's a Starfleet officer. They all would. And in this moment they should have all known that. Still, this is a beautiful moment.
  • Was past Michael really that angry?
  • Time Jump โ€” and we're back home.

Comment on this fediverse post

  • I like how we enter the bridge at shift change. That way it's implied Owosekun and Detmer are simply in another shift.
  • They are at the literal butt of space. (Sorry. ๐Ÿ˜‡)
  • Book and Michael are so good together. โค๏ธ
  • Wheeeee! The ISS Enterprise!
  • "You're not in this alone." โค๏ธ
  • With Book and Burnham on the Enterpriseโ€ฆ does that count as a cross over? Lika a cross over on more than one plane even.
  • More Book and Michael being great together โค๏ธ
  • Action Saru in every universe.
  • He's Breen! ๐Ÿ’š
  • Flashback time
  • Moll is very on the edge. I struggle to like her.
  • Ah, splitting them up now to get the conversations.
  • Oh no, L'ak! ๐Ÿ˜ข
  • I am intrigued by Kellerun cuisine. Infact, I did make lemon pudding (boiled cake x citrus) for the last episode back in June. Yum!
  • "It was nice. And we were happy." ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  • Hit it! ๐Ÿ˜†
  • Linus is full of surprises.
  • I like what Tilly says about the closeness of the intellectual and the spiritual. I often think this is forgotten, or not seen, or simply rejected.

E06 Whistle Speak

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Great light show! Perfect for disco ship DISCO. ๐Ÿ˜„
  • I love the feel of paper too, Mr Kovich
  • Though I wished they would say things like "This is a genuine 21st century [American] legal pad." Because this is not a global thing.
  • P+! Why are there no subitles to Paul speaking Spanish with his abuela???
  • No, Hugh, this AI therapy thing is creepy! We had such problems with the holodeck 800 years ago. When do these people ever learn? ๐Ÿ˜”
  • Great seeing Burnham show her xenoanthropological skills here.
  • I love Hugh for walking to the lab to speak with Paul, and not transporting.
  • Now that are some powerful singing bowls.
  • Those woods give me Robin Hood vibes.
  • "Go chase your moss. I'm the queen of endurance." Go, Tilly!
  • Definitely styrofoam rock. No scans needed. ๐Ÿ˜œ
  • Sacrifice!? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ฑ
  • Oh yes, the good old pull out a thing and turn it by 90 degrees technology. Always works. ๐Ÿ˜†
  • "Beliefs can evolve. Denying that can cause almost as much chaos as the worst storm."
  • I love Book playing video games.
  • Hugh and Book โค๏ธโค๏ธ
  • I wished there was more actual whistle speak in the episode of the same name.

E07 Erigah

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Ok, wow, the Disco is massive already. But compared to the Locherer she's tiny! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
  • Nhan!!
  • Having Moll in sickbay is a security risk. Don't say I haven't warned ya.
  • I'm a bit confused here. Where is Fed HQ? They did speed to Earth last season. Where did they go from there? And why? And why this nebula?
  • Go T'Rina!
  • Rayner, watch your mouth. This will not be tolerated... and he got sent outside.
  • Tilly thinking about her cadets. They will manage, Tilly, they will manage.
  • Hugh rocking that cool vest. ๐Ÿ”ฅ
  • Betazoid Dr Marina! โค๏ธ
  • Of course it's Reno! This woman is full of amazing surprises.
  • Seven of Limes. LOVE that. Want to try it. Give me all your recipes!
  • I would really love a bunch of Trek characters without a traumatic past.
  • T'Rina slaying it.
  • I told you so, Starfleet Security. Another thing they'll never learn.
  • Nooooo, L'ak! ๐Ÿ˜ญ This is not how your story should end.
  • Moll is super determined. She will stop at nothing. Not even at L'ak's death.
  • The Badlands! Let's gooooo!

E08 Labyrinths

Comment on this fediverse post

  • Moll is fearless and she's good.
  • Love Hy'Rell immediately.
  • Love the robe, and that necklace. Why can't I buy it yet?
  • ๐Ÿคฉ The Discovery approaching the Archive is so very beautiful. Love the angle and the blue.
  • A Kweijan artifact. ๐Ÿ˜ข
  • I love that library. What they did to expand it into what we see here is amazing. Beautiful!
  • Hy'Rell is hilarious!
  • How does Michael immidately go and press the card? Would you have pressed the card? I wouldn't. At least not within 2 seconds of laying my eyes on it.
  • As I said, Hy'Rell is hilarious.
  • Oh Book! ๐Ÿ˜ญ That is so beautiful. To have exhibits put at a place of honour to not forget lost cultures is amazing. And to allow Book to take the piece with him too. โค๏ธ
  • What happened?
  • I love how mindscape Book is moving in his robe. ๐Ÿ”ฅ
  • "May you gain knowledge elsewhere." ๐Ÿ˜†
  • Ok, I'm sorry, I have to say it, because it's a pet peeve of mine: Lanyrinths aren't mazes, and mazes aren't labyrinths. They are two very different things. The thing Michael finds herself in, is a maze. Not a labyrinth. *breaths* Ok, moving onโ€ฆ
  • I wanna pick Michael's little outburst about having to prove her worth constantly as my Captain's Speech moment for our current challenge. There's so much in there!
  • Adira and Paul have their own Warp Particles Moment! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Even two. ๐Ÿ˜†
  • Hysperians get mentioned, yay!
  • Her first word was "Book!" ๐Ÿคญ
  • ๐Ÿ˜ฑ The books!
  • I love the debris that jumped with the Discovery. Such details are wonderful.
  • Moll, you are one hell of a woman.

E09 Lagrange Point

  • Does T'Rina have a new assistant? Did she ditch Duvin?
  • Saru is back! Rillack is back!
  • Awww, space dads have to let their space kid fly.
  • Undercover mission, here we go. This is goong to be fun!
  • Action Saru once more.
  • Indeed, now is not the ideal time. But, this is what we were all waiting for. โค๏ธ
  • Ooh, oil bath. ๐Ÿ˜
  • Rayner and Tilly are great together.
  • "Maths doesn't lie."
  • Rayner sitting in the chair, whoohoo!
  • I don't have much to say about this episode somehow. It's one of my favourites though.

E10 Life, Itself

Comment on this fediverse post

  • That bin is bigger on the inside. (Sorry, I had to.)
  • And it reminds me a bit of the library and portal of the TOS episode "All Our Yesterdays".
  • It looks really cool.
  • The strong wind that doesn't move hair.
  • One last opening title sequence.
  • Really enjoy that bridge scene. Everyone get's their part, it's bumpy, we're in the middle of it.
  • I really enjoy the shakey cam on the Discovery.
  • Michael, don't walk away from Moll! We all know she's going to do something unwise.
  • Whooo! Action Saruuuuu!!
  • I did not figure the riddle out, btw. My first thought was the same as Moll's.
  • The visual effects are so stunning! The ships at the two black holes is so beautiful! ๐Ÿคฉ
  • Good crew. โค๏ธ
  • Saucer separation!! Yay!!
  • I love a good montage. And this one of the crew is a good montage.
  • Book โค๏ธ
  • Book is such a good guy. And I like Moll.
  • Kovich is Daniels! ๐Ÿคฏ You know what I want now, don't you? That's right: books!
  • The wedding! โค๏ธ
  • A kiss!!
  • That place is so magical. Elven-like.
  • Hello Book, oh my! ๐Ÿ˜
  • She loves him! And he loves her! ๐Ÿซ โค๏ธ

Coda

  • What an amazing house!
  • Oh gosh, and those two! ๐Ÿ˜ญ This is so beautiful!
  • Those three! ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  • There's so much Momma Burnham in older Michael. SMG is amazing!
  • There she is, indeed. โค๏ธ๐Ÿชฉ
  • Yeah, not a fan of the next bit.
  • Though all the ships saluting Discovery was beautiful. ๐Ÿฅบ

Season 5 review

Comment on this fediverse post

  • For four seasons it never occured to me that Sonequa Martin-Green was wearing a wig. But this season it is so obvious from episode one. I think it's because she's got long hair now and that needs to be hidden under it. Super high resolution/ sharpness is not great for prosthetics and wigs and things like that. It takes me out if it so easily, which annoys me. I shouldn't concentrate on those things. However, on my re-watch I did not see it. Did they go back and retouched the scenes where it was really obvious?
  • Four seasons we got puzzle boxes and galaxy ending threats. This season we gotโ€ฆ a literal puzzle (and a literal puzzle box) and a potential galaxy ending threat. *sigh* This remains a point in current Trek that I am pretty bored with. I love Discovery for so many things (the characters, the importance of connection and found family, love and kindness, and second chances), but this is not one of them.
  • Speaking of second chances. It just occured to me that not only did Burnham get a second chance, or Georgiou, or Rayner. The show itself got a second chance as well, by leaving the prequal prison and flying forwards in time.
  • I wished they would have made "Calypso" a dream that Zora has during her laying dormant. I wished they wouldn't have brought it back in the coda as a red directive mission. I know they wanted to make season 6 about it, and I am not mad that won't happen now. Not everything needs to be explained all the time. I wished writers would leave some things in limbo for us to spin our own stories. We still could do that anyway of course.
  • It's so unfortunate that Doug Jones, Emily Coutts, and Oyin Oladejo weren't available for most of the season. And Wilson Cruz for the coda.
  • I am so sad that we won't see Rayner again (at least not in more than a possible/ potential cameo/ guest appearance on Academy). He's such a great character. An antagonist, but a very likeable one. He has an arc that develops over the whole season. I love a character with an arc like that. At least we have the novels. I hope there will be more Discovery novels!
  • And with that I am also a bit sad that Callum Keith Rennie only got the chance to be great for one season. I would have loved to see more of him.
  • Did a crewmember whose name starts with a C die? My theory still stands though.
  • The deeper connection to Trek lore besides the main thing was nice: the Kellerun, the Breen, Kovich/ Daniels, Fred, selfsealing stembolts, and all the other little things.
  • Good-bye DISCO. You're a great show and I'm going to miss you.
