Weeknotes - W40/2026 (No.6)
posted on:
So it's October. At least we'll be on normal time again, soon. (I hate DST with a passion.) And the temperatures have been too warm, but at least it hasn't been cold too often yet. (I hate cold weather.) Lots of hate in this preface. 🫣 So let's turn our attention to the good stuff.
Goings on 🚶♀️➡️
- A few weeks ago Hyde asked me to be part of his Over/Under series he's been doing on his blog. I said yes and agonised over all the topics and questions for days, because I don't want to sound stupid to strangers on the internet. LOL On Monday the post went live: Over/Under #85 with Elena. That's me! ☺️
- Between Sept 23rd and 25th, 1726 a big fire burned down about ⅘ of my home town Reutlingen. Miraculously only three deaths are reported: an elderly man died in the flames, and two babies during birth (it's thought they were pre-mature due to shock). For this year's 300th anniversary two artists put on a video installation show in the biggest church in town. (Scroll down a bit for a short clip of impressions.) I went to see it this week with my mother, my father couldn't come unfortunately. It was really well made with projections on the walls and ceiling, as well as a huge screen in front of the altar and really dramatic organ music. Here's a little chronology of the fire, albeit only in German. Fun fact: our world record of having the narrowest street in the world is a direct result of the big city fire.
- Oct 3rd is German Unity Day, our national holiday. Along with Nov 9th, the fall of the Berlin Wall, a good reminder of what great courage and peaceful protest can bring.
- Next step in my quest for a fedi experience I want: Only boost beautiful, encouraging, funny, positive, solutions oriented things. At least for a while. More steps are on my to do list. But I like to take things one step at a time. I also dug out an old draft about this very topic to re-work and update and finally post in the near future.
Media 📚🎞️🎧
- I started and stopped listening to a space adventure audio play. It sounded cool, but by episode three there were exactly 2 female characters (among many male ones): one flirted with the male protagonist (and he with her), the other was jealous, and an android. Boooooooooring! Does anyone know fun (!) space opera/ adventure audioplays (or books) with more and "normal" women/ not men (as in not just there as the love interest to the male main character)?
- After a pause of over a month I continued to listen to Stanisław Lem's "Star Diaries". There's a well narrated German edition that I enjoy listening to. Great stories. Both fun and deep.
- And I finished my re-watch of German science fiction series Raumpatrouille. My fedi notes about episode 6 "Die Raumfalle" and episode 7 "Invasion". This show is both very much of its time (1966) and very modern for its time. All in all always great fun to re-watch, despite some cringy embarassing moments. I am so sad that German tv and film turned away from fun science fiction like that. It's not serious enough for German seriousness I guess. So German sci fi is all dark and weighty. 🤷♀️
- No DS9 episode this week. I can't watch so much stuff all at once. Two episodes over the weekend is all I manage. LOL Am I getting old? Will catch up next week.
The Web 💻
- There's a transporter room including Miles O'Brien on Floor 796 now. I love that site. A friend pointed out that there are puzzle games, too! And other fun, often interactive things. I didn't know about that at all. I need to click around more, and not just look at everything.
- Blake has written a beautiful and heartbreaking article about dice maker Louis Zocchi as well as grieving his own loss of abilities.
- If you need a little break and want to blow some saop bubbles in a back yard in Florida you can do that at Andie and Mike's Bubble Cam. This thing has been going since 2001! How that went past always online me for over 25 years I don't know. But it shows that the web has still a lot to discover. Via Kara Goldfinch. (Links)
- Joel wrote some beautiful short (micro?) fiction for the IndieWeb Fiction Carnival.
- Another one via the fedi: Stefan posted about the very interesting article "Philip Sidney and the Extreme (Dis)graces of the Parenthesis". I want to read "Arcadia" now.
- I enjoy reading Brennan's blog so much. "Why I Write (and Care) About the Internet, and What So Many People Get Wrong" is a good one. It fits right into what I can't stop thinking (and am trying to write) about.
