Yo, third time's the charm, right? We'll see how I'll do after this week when work has started again - after glorious 6.5 weeks of summer holidays.
Goings on 🚶♀️➡️
- New blogpost: The 5 Ws of Reading. An interesting questionnaire I found through a post in the fedi. More about that in the blog post itself.
- I wrote the Star Trek postcards I have offered to send to anyone interested and sent them off to the special cancellations office. I've never used them before, so fingers crossed!
- I talked about it last week: On Thursday, the 17th is the 60th anniversary of the German-French science fiction tv series Raumpatrouille. I want to do a re-watch/ watch-along to celebrate. Who wants to take part? This shall be very very informal, with no pressure whatsoever. I set up a post in the fedi (and here in English), if you'd like to chime in. I am not live posting, but will probably post my thoughts in list form after each episode. I'll be using the hashtag #60JahreRaumpatrouilleWatchparty. My schedule is something like this (please adjust for your own preference):
- Thu, 17th: episode 1
- Fri, 18th: episodes 2 and 3
- Sat, 19th: episodes 4 and 5
- Sun, 20th: episodes 6 and 7
- While the new school year starts on the 14th, the first day of work was already this week: A conference and a bit of shuffling stuff around. It was nice seeing all my co-workers again, though I'm already missing a few that have left. I also got frustrated within the first 10 minutes of entering the building. But I got some good news on the next day. Being persistant does work out sometimes. Here's to the new school year! (And the courage to try a career change.)
- This week was the first night where I got the thick blanket out again. Seems summer is over after all. Sad.
- Went to the zoo (Wilhelma in Stuttgart, Germany) with my family: my brother, his partner, their children, and my parents. I am very conflicted about zoos, but I also like to visit them. When I was still studying I watched all the zoo docu series on German tv every afternoon. That aside, it was a nice day. I visited my favourite animals, the giraffes (so elegant), and the penguins (so cute), and finally, even though I've been to the zoo a few times in the meantime, I managed to visit the "new" ape house they built in 2013. I also felt my age as my whole body hurt after a while. Slow walking and standing around a lot is exhausting.
- Spent the Sunday agonizing over a questionnaire. Agonizing. And I will keep agonizing for a while.

- Finished listening to another 2 books in the Perry Rhodan Kartanin miniseries: Book 4 "Die Substanz des Bösen" (⭐⭐⭐/5) and book 5 "Die Kralle von Ingastaar" (⭐⭐/5) (Books)
- On Star Trek Day (the 8th) I didn't watch any Star Trek. Instead I re-watched "Galaxy Quest". This film is absolutely wonderful in every way. The actors are fantastic, every single one. Alan Rickman is one of my all time favourite actors and he was killing it - as always. Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
- The great Columbo watch-through continues with season 3, episode 3 "Candidate for Crime". Gosh, does every bad guy need an affair? Boring! Also, I wasn't really satisfied that I never knew what Columbo was doing to convict the murderer. Usually it's fairly clear, but here it wasn't at all. Or I didn't pay enough attention, or was simply too stupid, or too far removed from the 70's to get it. I also watched episode 4 "Double Exposure". I liked it better than the previous one.
- This week's Star Trek: Strange New Worlds episode, the 8th of 10 already, is called "Orders of Magnitude". This week's genre: Star Trek. I have so many thoughts, some of which are behind this spoiler warning:
Heavy spoilers
Scotty in a scant! LOVE! - Great Uhura story and well deserved promotion - Great scenes between Jim and Sam - Great Kirk story - I hate how it all ended. Not from a writing/ story perspective, but from an in-universe perspective. Well maybe also from a writing perspective because I want to see more badmirals being court martialed and punished for their behaviour. I want the good people to win more and be visibile and recognised for it. We need those stories now so badly. We need to see it's possible. But I don't say that to hate on the writers. I like when stories frustrate me in that way because they make me think and that is what I love about Trek. - Kirk got teary eyed. Yes for more men showing these kinds of emotions!
- After not watching any Star Trek: Deep Space 9 last week, I watched two episodes this week: season 6, episode 11 "Waltz" and episode 12 "Who Mourns for Morn". I've been re-watching along with The Delta Flyers, a fantastic podcast.

- After last week's awful election result in one of Germany's states, I want to point you towards a great news site that's all about solution focused journalism: Squirrel News (English version here). I do not use their app, nor am I subscribed to their e-mail newsletter. I follow their feed (English feed here). Amidst all the awfulness around, there is still goodness in this world, people working on solutions for our problems. I refuse to loose hope. (Links)
- The fedi is a well of amazing finds. Like this one by Robin: One Canvas Many Hands, where many people paint one painting. Every person has one stroke per day. That's such a cool idea! (Links)
