Weeknotes - W35/2026 (No.1)

posted on:

This is a test thing. I never wanted to do my version of weeknotes or weekly link dumps. I thought it was too much work for me, work that I didn't want to commit to. I still think that, but why not try it anyway? See how it goes? There's no weeknotes police to come after me if I stop doing it after this initial post, or at any other time, is there?

Goings on 🚶‍♀️‍➡️

  • Went to Circus Roncalli in Ludwigsburg with my parents and a couple they are friends with. The ticket was my birthday present this year. As always the artists were phenomenal. My favourites were clown Kevinski, Trio Rêve (acrobalance), Duo Vitalys (hand to hand), Venice Carnival (trampoline with parallel bars), Justin Philadelphia (flying pole).
  • After having watched "The Terminator" in the cinema three weeks earlier, they showed "Terminator 2" this time for its 35 year anniversary. I love watching older films in the cinema. I only wished they would show the OV, too. What I really liked was how diverse the audience was. Yes, the majority were middle aged men. But there were also younger people, and older, as well as women of various age groups. Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
  • I'm offering to send a Star Trek postcard with a Star trek stamp and a matching first day of issue cancellation to anyone who follows some easy instructions. You do not need to follow me in the fedi, just do as I ask in the post. Original deadline: 31 August, but I think I can easily add at least another week (until 7 September).
  • There was a partial lunar eclipse in the very early morning on Friday, but I didn't get up to see it. It was probably behind a layer clouds anyway because it started to rain in the morning and continued to rain through the day.

Media 📚🎞️🎧

  • I started to read "Spuren ins Jetzt", a biography about the long forgotten 19th century German feminist, Hedwig Dohm. I first heard about her very recently in a German crime radio play, of all places. Dohm's writing is said to be full of wit and humour, sounding very modern to today's readers. I'm very intrigued and plan on reading her work after finishing this bio. A quote: "Die Menschenrechte haben kein Geschlecht." ("Human rights don't have a gender.")
  • Watched/ listened to parts of NHAMFest26. Cool music. It's always worth it to check out The Indie Beat Radio and The Indie Beat TV, too.
  • Finished "Verschwiegene Kanäle" ("Uniform Justice") by Donna Leon, the 12th book in her Commissario Brunetti series. As always, this book leaves you sad, appaled, and almost helpless. I still love this series so much because it is Brunetti's family life, his amazing wife Paola, and the good portion of his co-workers that bring joy and warmth and humour. They are a great and well needed counter balance to all the nepotism, arrogance, lust for power and money, and general repulsiveness of the people involved in the crimes, which are always murders. Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 (Books)
  • A postcard I received was the nudge I needed to finally finally start to dip into the vast canon that is German space opera novella series Perry Rhodan. I decided to go with a 12 book mini series called "Kartanin". (The usual main line cycles consist of ca. 50 books each, which is too much for me.) I listen to the audiobooks through the streaming service of my choice. First book is "Flucht zur Erde" ("Escape to Earth"). As a total newbie it is easy to get into. Characters, alien races, and the world are all explained as needed. However, I thought it was a bit longer than it needed to be. But this is a weekly novella series, going on for over 60 years now, they have to fill the pages somehow, I guess. Anyway, the narrator is good, the story intrigues me enough to keep going. Rating: ⭐⭐/5 (which sounds bad, but isn't really for how I rate) (Books)
  • Watched Star Trek: Strange New Worlds S4E6 (i.e. this week's episode) "Off-Hour" and really liked it. Definitely my favourite episode of the season, and also one of my favourites of the whole show. Finally Chapel got something good to do. And Scotty! I just like him a lot. There was one bit I rolled my eyes at, but it's still SNW and they just can't help themselves. I hope they can keep that upwards momentum for the final 4 episode of the season. 🤞
